Safeguards Supervision Mission: Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project(NEWMAP) (P124905)- December 12 - 29, 2016

Consequent upon the clearance of the Safeguard Mission by the Task Team Leader of NEWMAP Dr Amos Abu and the Practice Manager of World Bank;

This is to announce the safeguard Supervision mission scheduled to hold on the 12-29 December 2016.  

The objectives of the mission are to:

South-eastern Nigeria is a zone in tropical Africa that is notable for high population growth rate and unrefined thickness of wild forest, high rate of urbanization and poor rural asset base. Evidence has demonstrated that these are the primary main driving forces for the change in the rural land use in the area. In any case, since land usage will keep on being a piece of human environment and advancement, it is proper that the change is not opposed but be adapted in order to gain from the improvements in human welfare that may be associated with it if managed well.

With respect to the Project development objective which is to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-catchments.  NEWMAP; an eight year innovative, multi-sectoral project that finances state-led intervention to prevent and reverse land degradation, initially focusing on Gully Erosion Sites that threaten infrastructure and livelihood.

NEWMAP begins Joint FGN/World Bank Supervision Mission to States

25 November 2016

A joint enhanced Supervision mission for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project commenced from Monday 21st November 2016 beginning with special meetings with the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU). The mission involving the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), represented by the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) and the World Bank (WB). The mission will take the team through the 1st mover states beginning with Cross River, Abia, Imo ending with Enugu state on 4th December 2016.
